- Well, if 21.6K or 24K connections are routine, then that could
- certainly be applicable to your "why pay more?" argument.

- Sure it's achievable, but does it mean much? Not as far as I'm
- concerned.

- For many of us, there's practically no sense *at all* in comparing
- V.42bis compression capabilities because it doesn't make that much
- difference in what we use our modems for. Quite a few of the callers
- to my BBS have compression turned off, for example..

- I agree with you whole-heartedly about the hype, especially about
- V.34+. I have *yet* to see a 33600 connection with my V.34+, and
- perhaps a grand total of five 31200 connects (out of thousands).
- Meanwhile, I'm getting just as many (if not more) 28.8K connects from
- my "other" V.34 (without the "+"). My phone lines are typical of
- quite a few places in the world..probably better than a lot of folks',
- worse than others'. Some of my sysop friends in other parts of the
- U.S. tell me they're happy to get 26400. They're certainly not going
- to magically start getting 33600 connections if they shell out some
- bucks for a "+" model.
-
- Cheers,
